Curriculum Intent for Writing
At Beckley CE Primary School we want to ensure that high-quality teaching across all curriculum areas effectively supports pupils to meet expected outcomes in writing.
We encourage them to be inspired by rich texts that help them to think deeply and understand the world around them, enabling them to be caring citizens and reflect on the actions of fictional and non-fictional characters.
We want them to develop their writing skills so they feel they are successful learners and choose how they want to express themselves in writing by having the knowledge and experience to manipulate their writing accordingly. Therefore, we think it is essential that we develop pupils’ writing within two competences – transcriptional (spelling and handwriting) and compositional knowledge (articulating ideas and structuring them in speech and writing).
In addition, pupils are taught how to plan, revise and evaluate their writing. These aspects of writing have been firmly embedded into the units of work across all year groups in school.
We also focus hugely on fluent, legible and speedy handwriting. We believe with all these aspects the children will grow to be confident individuals in the future with writing.
