At Beckley, pupils commemorated the 80th Anniversary of VE Day – the day that the WW2 officially ended in Europe. Being such a key event in world history, it was vital that our children understood what was happening throughout this time, and the many ways it affected the everyday lives of all people, everywhere.

The children completed some homework about VE Day, from a range of ideas around the theme – making a model of the Spitfire fighter plane from the Battle of Britain; carrying out research about their own family stories from WW2; designing a cake for our VE Day Street Party; making a commemorative VE Day ‘coin’, and so on.
In addition, the children learnt the specially written VE Day 80 song, ‘I’ll Remember’ as well as songs from WW2 to perform at our ‘Street Party’. Ladies from the Beckley Women’s Institute came into school to help the children make food for the street party, using the rations from WW2 and a parent made the winning cake design which was shared with all the children at the party as well.
Parents, Governors and residents from the local community all joined the school children for our ‘ VE Day Street Party’ in the afternoon. Everyone dressed in ‘red, white and blue’ colours and enjoyed the party food made by the children. There was an exhibition of the VE Day work, and everyone joined together to sing ‘We’ll Meet Again.’ Our afternoon finished with prayers of remembrance, thanksgiving and for future peace in the world.
We won’t ever forget…
